There is actually little difference between Tietze’s syndrome and costochondritis. Both conditions are allied to each other and involve inflammation of the rib cartilage. In Tietze, the condition is limited to the cartilage between the ribs and the sternum, and there may be swelling at the base of the sternum. We speak of costochondritis if the cartilage between the ribs and spine, for example, is inflamed.
Rare or chronic disease?
At the association’s request, a survey of the target group was conducted by TNO in 2010. It is assumed that there are about 5,000 Tietze and/or costochondritis patients in the Netherlands with which the condition falls within the rare disorders. But that is only an assumption. In most diagnosed patients, the inflammations disappear after a few months, however, there are also Tietze patients whose symptoms persist for months to years. These patients fall under the chronic Tietze patients group and that is what the information on this website is also based on.

Some important facts about these conditions are:
- Tietze is not a life-threatening condition.
- The symptoms disappear on their own after a few months, but in some cases it also becomes chronic and the pain persists for years
- The pain symptoms can cause a lot of anxiety and stress
- The cause is not clear
- An unequivocal treatment is not known
- Contact with peers can help you
- Tietze occurs in all age groups in both men and women
- Tietze and costochondritis are both non-bacterial inflammations and therefore cannot be treated with antibiotics
- Treatment consists of administering anti-inflammatory pain medication, but physical therapy and proper posture and abdominal breathing can provide relief
“I feel and think that people with Tietze need to stay mostly themselves. What is good for you is not always good for someone else. So stand up for yourself. A little less can also be quite good.”
To clarify:
costo = rib
chondr = cartilage
itis = inflammation
